In a world where men are not always known for being the best at looking after themselves, and with the NHS under unprecedented pressure, what could be done to protect men from the scourge of prostate cancer?
Well, some eight months ago, Cancer Testing South, a Surrey charity run to facilitate testing outside of the NHS, asked Trident Honda in Ottershaw if they would make available their premises as a regular testing venue. Trident Honda was the ideal venue, being located on the busy A320 Guildford Road between Woking and Chertsey, having plenty of on-site parking, and being a very well-known location in Surrey.
Trident Honda jumped at the chance, in part because their founder died with prostate cancer in 2017, but also because they understood the fundamental importance of regular testing in ensuring that this cancer can be caught and treated early and greatly increasing the chances of a full recovery.
For the last eight months, Trident Honda has opened its doors to Cancer Testing South, allowing them to run a monthly Prostate Cancer detection clinic. These are usually held on the first Saturday of every month.
The procedure takes only a couple of minutes, and consists of a very simple and painless blood test, performed by trained nurses. The blood samples are then sent to a local laboratory, and results are made available usually within five days. In the majority of cases the result will indicate that no further action needs to be taken; however, if the reading is above normal, then the result will contain advice on the next steps to be taken.
The service is free, except for a small charge to cover the laboratory costs.
The numbers so far
These events at Trident Honda have proved very successful, with 272 men having been seen, of whom 247 had a clear green result, 12 had an amber score, whilst 13 had a red score. This represents 9% of men who needed further medical advice, because their score showed concerns that warranted taking further action. The whole point of doing these tests is to achieve exactly this, to act as an early warning that will hopefully save many men's lives, because they took the testing opportunities seriously.
90% of men who have their prostate cancer detected early are cured.
The coming year
As we near the end of 2022, Cancer Testing South approached Trident Honda to ask if they would continuing their support. Richard Roberts, Managing Director of Trident was delighted to agree, stating, “Trident Honda is absolutely delighted to continue supporting the testing by agreeing to be a venue throughout 2023! We are so pleased to have made testing easier for nearly 300 men, some of whom have been our team members. We look forward to continuing to support Cancer Screening South in 2023!”
